The Science
Kidney beans are very high in fiber (89% DV per 100g), which can exacerbate IBS symptoms like bloating, gas, and cramping, especially in individuals with constipation-predominant or mixed IBS. However, the fiber is mostly insoluble and may help some with constipation, but the high FODMAP content (not shown in nutrient data) and rapid fermentation can trigger symptoms in many IBS sufferers. The protein and magnesium are beneficial for overall health but do not offset the potential GI distress.
If you have IBS, introduce kidney beans in small, well-cooked portions (e.g., 1/4 cup) and monitor tolerance, or opt for low-FODMAP alternatives like lentils in moderation.
